For more than 160 years, the YMCA has nurtured potential and united communities across America to create lasting, meaningful change. Everything the Y does is in service of building a better us. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to teach youth, teens, and adults to swim, so they can stay safe around water and learn the skills they need to make swimming a lifelong pursuit for staying healthy.

Y swim instructors are nationally certified. Their training includes CPR, AED, First Aid and Oxygen Administration. Swim lessons provide important life skills that could save a life and will benefit students for a lifetime.

Preschool Ages 3-5

Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills: swim, float, swim—sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit—and jump, push, turn, grab.

In Water Acclimation, Water Movement, and Water Stamina students are taught the recommended skills for all to have around water including safe water habits, underwater exploration, and how to swim to safety and exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Activities, games, and drills, geared to reinforce learning, are utilized heavily as students progress in this skill-based approach to swimming.

Stage: Water Acclimation (3yr-5yr)

Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self rescue skills performed with assistance.

Stage: Water Movement (3yr-5yr)

Encourages forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently.

Stage: Water Stamina (3yr-5yr)

Develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages.

School Ages 6-12

Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

In Water Acclimation, Water Movement, and Water Stamina swimmers are introduced to the four competitive swimming strokes as well as rescue skills and healthy lifestyle habits.

Stage: Water Acclimation (6yr-12yr)

Introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke.

Stage: Water Movement (6yr-12yr)

Introduces breast-stroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke.

Stage: Water Stamina (6yr-12yr)

Refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Stage: Pre-Competitive

Increase stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming in a competitive atmosphere.

Adult Swim Lessons

For students starting at age 13 who are ready to learn – from beginners getting comfortable in the water to competitive swimmers working on stroke technique.

Adult

Learn to be comfortable in water by developing swim technique.

Pre-Competitive Swim Team

This swim program provides a bridge between swim lessons and swim team. It’s the ideal opportunity for swimmers who want to continue swimming during the winter months without committing to a year-round swim team.

Private Swim Lessons

If you feel that you or your child would work better in a one on one setting, want to work on a specific stroke or skill, or would like more flexible class times, private lessons may be a better option for you.

Private lessons are by request only, and limited to 1:1 ratios. Private lessons are paid by the hour, $55/hour for members and $80/hour for non-members. While we can accommodate hour long lessons, we do encourage participants (especially children) to do 30 minute lessons.

*A private swim lesson request does not guarantee lessons. Instructor availabilities are limited; we will try our best to fulfill your request as soon as possible.
